Van Toen Plant Vaseline is a natural balm that consists of a base of a vegetable oil and fat mix of, among other things, Castor oil, Japanese fruit wax and Macadamia oil. This combination provides the same effect as regular petroleum jelly (petrolatum).

What are the properties of petroleum jelly for the skin?

Vaseline has become best known for taking good care of dry skin and eczema. But why is Vaseline so good at this?

Vaseline is an occlusive substance. Occlusive means petroleum jelly covers your skin so that the moisture that normally evaporates from your skin can't escape now. Your skin is also protected by this layer against external influences.

Because petroleum jelly has a naturally very oily texture, it also stays on your skin well after you apply it.

If you have very sensitive or dry skin, or if you have skin problems where the barrier function of your skin is damaged (such as eczema), Vaseline helps enormously: by covering your skin gets the chance to repair itself without external disturbances. The Vaseline also moisturizes your skin so that it fights dryness (such as dry patches on your skin) in a very effective way.

Vaseline seals the skin so is bad for the skin:

Not true! As you have read above, Vaseline works so well because it seals your skin. And shutting down is really different from suffocating. Vaseline actually helps your skin to recover because your skin is not hindered by external effects because of the layer. Several studies have shown that shutting down promotes skin recovery, so don't be hindered by blogs written with insufficient knowledge.

Making a vegetable Vaseline is not the same as melting together random fats and pouring them into a jar. Fats such as coconut oil and olive oil have none of the good properties that petroleum jelly (petrolatum) does have for promoting skin recovery.
